Halo:CE doesn't hold up as good as you may think it does. Also, nearly twenty years on, The Library is one of the worst levels in any video game in terms of needless frustration and poor level design. Everything past that point is also just a previous level backwards.

Lots of good stuff in Halo, but yeah The Library was not really playing to the game’s strengths...

We were occasionally blessed by the Shotgun Fairy, who brought us shotgun ammo.
Often, the Shotgun Fairy was displeased, so we did a lot of checkpoint reloading.

The throwaway weapon design is dumb. Super dumb. Why would aliens, us, or ANYONE leave
weapons out in the battlefield the enemy can find and then use? Why can’t Mr. Mega Human just carry more ammo? He can wear a buick as a battlesuit but not carry more shells? The most frustrating
thing about this game’s very good shotgun is knowing at some point you will be forced to throw it away.
The enemy are supposed to be technologically advanced aliens, but their weapons are only par against ours, which means they suck. How did we ever lose to them?

Because they took the "nuke from orbit" approach.

I agree. I’ve been playing though a couple checkpoints at a time every couple of days. The number of times you come around a corner and they’ve given the flood rocket launches for no reason really makes it even worse. The library is just a maze of copy paste corridors .
Having said that, taken in period context, it was great. Most people had never seen anything like it. It’s kind of the Corvette of games. The best Corvette is almost always the newest one. When you go back, it’s hard to really appreciate it as a whole package because it brought [x] to the masses and no everyone does [x] so no big deal. I remember Halo 2 being a revelation because of the multiplayer but there’s no way that it would hold a candle to Overwatch or any of the other modern games. Halo 3/4 may be a little difference since those stepped up the story arch but meh. I’m still going to play through all of them as they come out in the MCC, but it’s kind of like driving all the generations of Corvette back to back.

Well said.
Rocket flood are also the worst.

All of Halo CE levels had varying degrees of repetition but T
he Library was just boring after dealing with the discovery of flood the level before.
I
t just felt like nothing was
happening
;
343 just muttering away unlocking
the occasional
thing
and flood spawning
around corners, alleys
and out of vents. Play the first 3
min then repeat
it 10
x again.

I don’t mind the backwards levels. There’s new flood enemies and they’re fighting the covenant, and you often take different routes with different objects around. And it’s a smart way of using assets and stuff, allowing you to spend dev time and disk space elsewhere!
I fucking love that game. The first one only.

Counter point:
It’s part of level design! If you just always carried the best weapons into any level it wouldn’t be as exciting. They force you to mix it up for certain scenarios.
Their weapons are better against humans but we normally aren’t fighting humans. They don’t need reloads, their shots track targets, you can do a charged pistol shot and the needler can be very effective when used right. Their grenades stick. Their weapons are better against the flood too, except the shotgun. But nobody expected to fight the flood.

Objectively wrong.

Speaking of old ass games I started playing Fable last night. For the first time . This is the longest freaking tutorial I’ve ever played.

That games release date is closer to the original Mario brothers on NES than to current day. I bet it holds up just fine in that context

I just played through The Library with a friend and yeah, that level has not aged well. It’s about 3 times longer than it needs to be because it’s the exact same corridors and rooms copy pasted over and over again for no reason. It’s not even fun by the end, it’s just frustrating.

Just to be That Nerd (TM), the books do a great job of explaining it.
Basically, they have impressive tech , and overwhelming numbers, a willingness to sacrifice themselves , so the average dude didn’t really stand a chance. It took a group of Spartans IIs (Who were specially selected and kidnapped as children , then trained, and genetically modified in a program with I believe a 8 0% mortality rate, and then given insane power armor that normal people couldn’t use ) to actually start winning some battles. Those battles allowed for some stolen tech that humans learned from and improved up on to help fight back even more. (The Spartan shields were reverse engineered from a jackal’s shield).
If you’re into sci-fi books at all, the first few in the halo universe a pretty good.
